CATHERINE MCRAE ATTENDED PEOPLE TO PEOPLE LEADERSHIP SUMMIT

Catherine McRae, an eleventh grader at STA, attended a People to People Leadership Summit during the summer. McRae, along with fellow delegates from around the country, participated in hands-on group service work. During the week-long program in New Orleans, McRae learned about effective leadership and how to develop her own leadership abilities to make a difference upon returning home. Hands-on activities, professional speakers, workshops, and visits to significant local venues gave McRae a new perspective on the definition of leadership.

“This program gave me a new insight to leadership, service, and how the two are intertwined. I worked with young people from all over the country this week. They didn't know me, and I didn't know them. There was so much diversity between us, but our passion for service is what brought us together. We made friendships to last a lifetime and left a lasting impression on New Orleans, a place I call 'home.'" says McRae.

People to People Leadership Summits are designed to allow students a chance to explore the various aspects of leadership in specific contexts, and they are held in prestigious venues around the country. Programs focused on the role of young women as leaders, politics, or community service help students discover their own potential. The programs offer students a unique blend of specialized educational, leadership, and cultural exposure as well as an itinerary filled with the highlights of the hosting community. Participants in these programs often experience life-changing attitudes toward individual and shared responsibilities, global leadership, appreciation of cultural diversity, and enhanced personal growth and self-confidence.
